Cost-Share Funds Available

Well-sealing typically costs between $300 and $1000. Morrison SWCD can provide cost-share funds up to 75% of cost to landowners who arrange to seal their unused (or abandoned) wells.

Landowner must apply for the funding before sealing the well. Call our office for more information on how you can defray this cost. State law requires that well sealing be done by a licensed well contractor.

Protecting Groundwater

Groundwater is found in underground geologic formations called aquifers. Layers of earth protect groundwater and act as natural barrier to contam- ination. Unsealed wells however, pose a threat, because they are a direct conduit for pollutants or contaminants to reach the aquifers below, and could potentially affect nearby drinking water wells.

Protecting groundwater is important because groundwater is the main source of drinking water for three out of every four Minnesotans.
